Who We Are
Where We Are
The Glenholm Centre provides a wide range of computer courses either at its training facility between Peebles and Biggar in the Scottish Borders, or on site wherever you are. Whether you're a home user, a small business or a larger organisation, and wherever you come from (but particularly if you are based in Edinburgh, South Lanarkshire or the Scottish Borders), we can provide the computer training you require tailored to your specific needs.
We specialise in Microsoft Office (up to and including 2013) and OpenOffice software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Publisher and FrontPage from the Office Suite; Writer, Calc, and Base from OpenOffice). We also cover Microsoft operating systems and Internet applications and run courses on the use of digital cameras, scanners, picture editing and web design. Our courses are designed to cater for all levels of computer user.
All courses, which are conducted by Neil Robinson, are practical and flexible in nature, encouraging participants to learn through practice and experiment, and aim to break through the jargon that often clouds computer technology. On courses at Glenholm each participant has a dedicated computer for the duration of the course and at the Centre groups are never larger than four.
Participants of all computer courses receive detailed course notes and are entitled to one month of free support by telephone or e-mail after completing the course as long as this support relates to the course attended.
Two styles of training are available:
The list of courses currently offered appears below. However we are constantly developing new training programmes and can often tailor courses to the specific requirements of the customer. Please contact us if the course you require does not appear here.
We can offer one to one training at the Glenholm Centre near Broughton in the Scottish Borders (detailed directions and maps can be found in a separate page) or both one to one and group training on the customer's premises if required. Costs vary depending on the style of training and location.
As people become more familiar with their computers and their needs become more specialised and specific, this is an increasingly popular style of training. One to one sessions are charged by the hour, can cover any topics that the trainee chooses, and can be held at the Glenholm Centre or at the trainee's premises (home or office). In the latter case there would also be a transport charge.
The relax and learn computing breaks combine one to one tuition spread over two or more days (up to five) with accommodation. The shorter courses usually cover one specific computer topic while the five day courses combine elements from a number of applications. The more formal component of the training is typically conducted during the morning sessions which may run from 9.00 AM to 1.00 PM. However participants have access to a computer throughout the afternoon for practice if they so wish with professional support available throughout this period. Lunch is available.
These courses are normally residential with participants arriving in time for dinner the evening before the first day of training and leaving on the afternoon of the last day of training.
Five day courses usually commence on a Tuesday and finish on a Saturday. Two day courses may be held on any two consecutive days but typically are held at weekends.
Rates for different styles of training are displayed below along with the list of courses available.
The Centre is able to provide on-site training either at a customer's premises or at an independent venue. Such training is often tailored to the needs of the customer and may include any of the content included in the courses listed below.
In the past the Centre has run courses at the Heriot Watt Galashiels campus for the Borders Training Group and at Tweed Horizons for Scottish Enterprise Borders using equipment based at those venues. We have also held seminars for members of the VisitScotland Scottish Borders and Scottish Enterprise Borders (SEB) at various hotels around the Scottish Borders and at SEB's Ettrick Riverside premises in Selkirk. Since 2005, and in conjunction with People First Training, we have provided IT training in London for MAN Roland.
A more flexible but perhaps more focused and time efficient option is to organise a short workshop. Training in this case would not be hands-on, but answers to questions would be prepared in advance and then explained using PC and projector, with the opportunity for further related questions, answers and discussion. Such sessions would not normally last for more than about an hour and a half.
Finally, within a single day or half day, we have held a series of short 1-to-1 sessions around a single computer with employees of a number of Scottish Borders and Edinburgh based businesses. In this way each employee can get quick answers to their outstanding questions.
Costs of on site training will vary depending on location, style of training and number of participants. Example rates are listed below.
